Investigating Benefits and Challenges of Converting Retiring Coal Plants into Nuclear Plants

The report evaluates the potential for coal-to-nuclear (C2N) transitions by siting nuclear reactors at retired coal power plants in the United States.

The study team evaluated recently retired and currently operating coal power plants sites. The study found that 80% of the evaluated plant sites have the basic characteristics needed to host an advanced nuclear reactor.

A case study on the detailed impacts and potential outcomes of a C2N transition is included. This includes costs and potential economic and job benefits for the region.
