Evaluation of Nuclear Power Plant and Coal Power Plant Sites for New Nuclear Capacity

September 10, 2024

The System Analysis and Integration Campaign (SA&I) conducted a study to estimate the potential for siting new 600 MWe+ facilities at operational and recently retired coal and nuclear power plant sites. Using updated 2024 data and prior analysis tools, they assessed CPP sites, current NPP sites with cancelled unit plans, and others based on aerial and visual analysis of site footprints.

This report highlights significant opportunities to expand nuclear energy at both operating and retired coal plants, as well as existing nuclear power plants.

Key findings include:

- 145 coal plant sites could host up to 174 GWe of new nuclear capacity.
- 54 existing and 11 retired nuclear sites could support an additional 60–95 GWe of nuclear energy.

This promising report shows how repurposing existing infrastructure can fast-track the transition to clean energy, create jobs, and reduce carbon emissions.
