⚡The Repower Initiative is a global non-profit dedicated to accelerating the clean Repowering of coal power, led by QuantifiedCarbon.
🌱 We are a multi-disciplinary network of scientists, technologists, policy makers, finance experts, researchers, educators and so many others.
🔥⏩🎆 Fossil fuels need to be phased out urgently to avoid the worst impacts of the climate crisis. Coal power produces one third of the world’s CO₂ emissions. By replacing the coal boiler with a low-carbon source of heat, the coal site infrastructure can be reused.
🌲 A Repowered plant can continue to generate power for decades. Workers can be retained and retrained, local communities can be protected, investments can be maintained, and greenhouse gas emissions and pollution from coal can be massively reduced.
We are glad to journey together with you all to a bright future.

📰 Repowering South Korea with Small Modular Reactors
🎓2024 started strongly with the working partnership with the research team at the Korean Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST), a world-class science and technology university in South Korea. Our partners at KAIST include Professor Jeong Ik Lee, one of the world’s foremost experts in modular nuclear systems.
🤝 In February, we announced the news that we have entered into a formal collaboration with Institut Teknologi Bandung (ITB), the leading technical university in Indonesia.
In March, we collaborated with our Polish partners in DEsire on an academic paper.

🌐 Our Repower Ecosystem gathered in Xiamen, China on the 27th-28th of April 2024. We introduced and welcomed new members into our growing community, sharing knowledge and collaborative discussions at this successful summit.
📃 With philanthropic funding from HSBC, we wrote a report to explore the feasibility of repowering in Asia, including identifying potential sites for conversion, entitled ‘Financing the Clean Repowering of Coal Power’.
The report was launched internationally in Singapore, Jakarta and London.

📝 Report: Financing the Clean Repowering of Coal Power
📃 Our team participated in the London Climate Action Week (LCAW). Repower Founder, Staffan Qvist presented our finance report, introducing the concept of Repowering to the finance community.
🔢 We also launched RepowerScore V5, with numerous extra features. RepowerScore is an assessment tool in active development. It expresses the suitability of Repowering a coal-fired power plant with clean energy sources, such as next-generation geothermal, advanced nuclear, and in V5 we introduced concentrated solar power (CSP) as a pathway option.
Coal units are scored on an expanding set of technical, geographical and economical factors.
The higher the RepowerScore, the better the coal unit is fit for Repowering!
📃 ‘Coal Repowering in China: Governance Challenges and Possible Solutions’. is an original report, which gives an overview of China's electricity governance, with emphasis on policy, regulatory and industrial settings.
🔑 Bryony Worthington delivered a keynote speech on advancing the coal power transition at the ISETS conference and joined the panel discussion with distinguished experts.
🌐Over 40 leading experts from South Korea, China, Indonesia, Poland, India, Singapore and the UK met at our Summit in Seoul to share their research and innovations.
🎉 The Repower Initiative was selected by Vox as one of the eleven “most high-impact, cost-effective, evidence-based organizations for fighting climate change effectively”.
Vox is a popular American news website, publishing articles around 21st century issues.
Repower Founder Staffan Qvist said that it's a “wonderful recognition of the amazing Repower community!”.
We warmly welcomed Georg Holzner and Christie Capper to the Repower Initiative team. They will be bringing their expertise to perform case studies for Vietnam and Thailand.
🌎 The Repower Initiative’s momentum is accelerating, and we are expanding our partnerships across the world.
In 2025, we are well-positioned to support countries and regions with the highest potential to reduce emissions.
Here’s what to look out for in the year ahead:
o Hosted by the Silesian University of Technology
o Active participation of CEOs of Poland’s largest energy companies
o Attended by pioneering clean technology developers, asset owners, and key financial institutions
o Techno-economic analyses for Repowering coal power plants with clean technologies such as advanced nuclear, next-gen geothermal and thermal energy storage
o Data collection and evaluation
o Working with asset owners and technology developers.
o Better reporting and analysis tools
o New pathways
o Multi-language support
o Chinese hosted version
o Smartphone app
o Inclusion of other factors: Infrastructure/Regulatory/Policy
⚡ We need to find a way to close and Repower 2 TW of coal power globally by 2050. The Repower Initiative invite you to contribute to our optimistic movement to achieve this goal.
🌱 We believe in a clean and peaceful future where we respect our beautiful planet, and are committed to combine our hearts, minds and willpower to make this a reality.
The Repower Initiative began in 2019 and is a global non-profit initiative led by QuantifiedCarbon.
QuantifiedCarbon is a technical consultancy agency focused on decarbonisation of the global economy. They initiated and manage the Repower Initiative.
